Fiona
Fiona (b. 1977) is a Grammy award winning songwriter and singer. She has sold approximately 5 million albums worldwide. She is known for her outspoken political and social views. A vegan, she is an active spokesperson for vegetarian issues and regularly works with the animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals as well as other social and charitable organizations.
Fiona was born in New York to an entertainment industry family. Her father and brother are actors. Her mother and sister are singers. A younger brother is a music video director. Her grandparents comprised of a singer and a dancer.
At age 4 her parents divorced and she was compelled to divide her time between living with her father during the summer and with her mother during school months. The resulting psychological implications of perceived divided loyalties undoubtedly left her emotionally fragile and prone to feelings of diminished self-worth.
Period of abuse
At age 12 she was returning from school to her mother’s home when she was attacked and sexually assaulted by a person unknown to her. While most incidents of child sexual abuse occur between known persons, the largely inaccurate stereotype of being attacked by a stranger is possible. The advantage of not being abused over a long period of time is offset by the disadvantage of being attacked without warning and the inevitable distrust of unknown persons and society as a whole.
The psychological trauma of the attack manifested itself in a series of self-destructive behaviors. She developed obsessive-compulsive disorder and resorted to a number of anti-social outbursts. Several months after the attack she confessed to a childhood friend that she was planning on killing her sister as well as herself. It is unknown how serious her intentions were. It was only then that she was placed in psychological counseling. Thoughts of suicide and actual attempts are common among survivors and can only be diminished through counseling and therapy. Without treatment, self-destructive impulses of survivors can easily lead to suicide.
Therapy and subsequent results
Fiona has undergone sporadic therapy sessions for the majority of her life and often incorporates elements of counseling in her music. It is recommended that all survivors undergo psychological counseling to help them understand their feelings of guilt and diminished self-worth.
The trauma that many survivors experience often manifests itself in increased sexual promiscuity and drug abuse during adolescence and early adulthood. Only recently has Fiona decreased in sexual promiscuity, with rumors of her celebrity dating habits subsiding following a long-term relationship. She has undergone treatment for drug abuse several times throughout adolescence and early adulthood.
At age 18 she was brought to the attention of executives at Sony Music and was contracted to make recordings of her music. Her debut album was an international success and won a Grammy Award for her performance. She generated controversy with an overtly sexual promotional music video. The video won numerous awards and helped increase record sales, but promted her to simultaneously reject and applaud her own actions. Internal psychological conflicts are common during manifestations of self-abusive behavior. The following year she further aliented segments of her own industry with public outbursts and a scathing verbal indictment during a nationally televised awards ceremony.
Current activities
In 1999 she released her second album. It was not as successful as her first, but it was well received and she again won a Grammy Award for her performance. The following year she had a psychological breakdown while performing and verbally attacked the audience as well as music critics.
In 2004 Fiona finished recording her third album. Her record company chose not to release the album to the general public, but the material found its way onto the Internet and public support increased. In 2005 the album was released and became her most commercially successful album to date. It was nominated for several awards.
Today Fiona is a celebrated recording artist and performs internationally. She has never married and has no children.
